About this event

About the PHR National Asylum Network:

Physicians for Human Rights (PHR)'s National Asylum Network is a 1,200-strong nationwide network of health professionals who volunteer their time to provide pro bono forensic medical and psychological evaluations to survivors of torture and ill-treatment who seek refuge and an opportunity to recover in the United States. These forensic evaluations document compelling evidence of physical and psychological trauma, and, when submitted with an application for asylum, can make the critical difference between being granted safe haven in the U.S. and being returned to persecution and violence.

Applicants who have a forensic evaluation are three times as likely to win their asylum cases compared to those without this documentation.

Following completion of this training, clinicians will be equipped to perform forensic medical or psychological evaluations and prepare a legal affidavit supporting each client's legal case for asylum. Trained medical students will have the opportunity to assist clinicians both in medical evaluations and in preparing affidavits for clients as an integral part of the upcoming Baylor College of Medicine Human Rights and Asylum Clinic.

Who is this training for?

Human rights-minded MDs, NPs, PhDs or PsyDs in clinical psychology or social work, LCSWs, LPCs, and Baylor College of Medicine medical students are all welcome to attend.

Note: PHR Asylum Network trainings are required for health professionals and students who wish to volunteer at the Baylor College of Medicine Human Rights and Asylum Clinic, as well as for providers who want to be part of the Physicians for Human Rights Asylum Network.

What's included in the training?

Training will include sessions on legal background, conducting physical and psychological forensic evaluations, and affidavit writing, as well as an opportunity to network with other human rights-minded health professionals and learn how to get involved with the Baylor College of Medicine Human Rights and Asylum Clinic.

**CME/CE/CME ethics credit is available to training attendees**
